Drive from Kathmandu to Nyalam (3,740m) – 36km

Nepal-Tibet Border. After completing the immigration formalities at the border, we drive towards Nyalam. Moving up a series of incredibly steep switchbacks, which passes through a mossy gully with cascading waterfalls, we reach Nyalam

Nyalam (3,740m)

It is wise to spend a day resting and acclimatizing to the altitude in Nyalam before heading up higher. A short way out of town there is a small temple, Nyalam Pelgye Ling, which is associated with the eleventh and twelfth century poet-lama Milarepa, also you can do trek up to the hill.

Drive to Old Tingri(4300m) – 150km

Today’s drive to Old Tingri takes around four hours, crossing two spectacular passes along the way, Tongla pass (5,220m) and Lalung La pass (5,082m). Today there are some spectacular views of the Himalayas to be had, including Mt. Jugal Himal, Mt. Makalu (8,464m), Mt. Shishapangma, Mt. Choyu and, of course, the mighty Mt. Everest (8,848m).

Drive from Old Tingri (4,300m) to Rongbuk (5,200m) – 85 km

After breakfast it’s just a short, easy drive to Rongbuk, the highest monastery in Tibet – leaving plenty of time to explore this historic treasure. Once again, there are some stunning views to be had of the Himalayas. And of course you will visit EBC and have a great view on Mt. Everest.

Drive from Rongbuk to Shigatse (3830m) – 340Km

Today your Land Cruisers will cover some rocky terrain, covering the eight to ten hour drive to the city of Shigatse. Shigatse is the home of the famous Tashilumpo Monastery, the historical seat of the Panchen Lama lineage and well known for its huge Thangka wall.

Drive from Shigatse to Gyantse (3,950m) – 90km

In the morning we’ll visit the Tashilumpo Monastery and the local bazaar of Shigatse. After lunch it’s just a pleasant two hours drive to Gyantse, which has the Khumbum Stupa and the Phalkor Monastery

Drive from Gyantse to Lhasa (3650m) – 265km

The drive to the final enticing destination of Lhasa takes eight hours, crossing two passes – the Karo La pass (5,010m) and Kamba La pass (4,794m) – as well as the dazzling lake Yamdrok Tso (Turquoise Lake). We’ll also cross the wide Yarlung Tsangpo river and catch our first views of the legendary Potala Palace.

Lhasa/ Sightseeing Potala Palace and Sera Monastery

After breakfast you will set off to view the majestic Potala Palace, which towers above the city of Lhasa. You get to see an overwhelming array of intricate Tibetan murals, temples, stupas, and the tombs of eight Dalai Lamas. After lunch, you will be taken on a visit to beautifully landscaped Sera monastery. At the monastery you can observe monks chanting and performing religious discourses.

Lhasa / excursion to Drak Yerpa caves and Jokhang Tempel Barkhor market

The Drak Yerpa caves are about an hour’s drive to the northeast of Lhasa. King Songtsen Gampo meditated here as did Padma Sambhava and several of his disciples. The site is strongly associated with Jowo Atisha and the early Kadampa masters. After Lunch we will visit the Jokhang temple provides yet another exciting and educative tour. Wandering around Barkhor market is another major highlight of the day.

Drive to Tsedang (3, 600m) – 170 km

Drive along Yarlung Tsangpo river through barley and wheat fields to the third largest city in Tibet. In route we will Visit Mindroling Monastery, built in 10th century and highly reputed for its contribution towards astronomy, astrology, medicine and calligraphy. The Murals on the wall have very special significances and shows the typical Tantric.

Yarlung Valley & Samye tour

Today will be spent exploring the Yarlung valley and the Yumbulhakang. This castle perched dramatically on a pinnacle above the valley, is the oldest known dwelling in Tibet and reputedly the home of the Yarlung Kings. The view from the castle is awesome. The tour continues to the west of Tsedang, crossing the Yarlung Tsangpo River to Samye Monastery. It is situated in a green valley among barren mountains surrounded by a village. Samye Monastery is founded in 779 AD and is one of the most imposing sights of Tibet. Modeled on the University of Otantapuri in India and planned as a representation of the universe it has a collection of pagodas and temples.

It is a 2 hrs drive to the airport. Your guide will escort you to the airport in time to catch your flight home OR by train to China.
