Drive Kathmandu- Nyalam (3,750 m) – 36 km

The tour starts at the Nepal-Tibet Border. After completing the immigration formalities at the border, we drive towards Nyalam. Moving up a series of incredibly steep switchbacks, which passes through a mossy gully with cascading waterfalls, we reach Nyalam.

Drive to Shegar (4,150m) – 210 km

Today’s drive to Shegar takes around five hours, crossing two spectacular passes along the way; Tongla pass (5,220m) and Lalung La pass (5,082m). Today there are some spectacular views of the Himalayas to be had, including Jugal Himal, Mt. Makalu (8,464m), Mt. Shishapangma, Mt. Choyu and, of course, the mighty Mt. Everest (8,848m).

Drive to Shigatse (3,830m) – 240 km

Today you will drive to the city of Shigatse. Shigatse is the home of the famous Tashilumpo Monastery; the historical seat of the Panchen Lama lineage and well known for its huge Thangka wall.

Drive Shigatse to Gyantse (3950m) – 90 km

In the morning we’ll visit the Tashilumpo Monastery and the lokal bazaar of Shigatse. After lunch it’s just a pleasant two hours drive to Gyantse, which has the Khumbum Stupa and the Phalkor Monastery.

Drive Gyantse to Lhasa (3,650m) – 265km

The drive to the final enticing destination of Lhasa takes eight hours, crossing two passes – the Karo La pass (5,010m) and the Kamba La pass (4,794m) – as well as the dazzling lake Yamdrok Tso (Turquoise Lake). We’ll also cross the wide Yarlung Tsangpo river and catch our first views of the legendary Potala Palace

Lhasa / Sightseeing Potala Palace and Sera Monastery

After breakfast, you will set off to view the majestic Potala Palace, which towers above the city of Lhasa. You get to see an overwhelming array of intricate Tibetan murals, temples, stupas, and the tombs of eight Dalai Lamas. After lunch, you will be taken on a visit to beautifully landscaped Sera monastery. At the monastery you can observe monks chanting and performing religious discourses.

Lhasa / excursion to Drak Yerpa caves and Jokhang Temple Barkhor market

The Drak Yerpa caves are about an hour’s drive to the north east of Lhasa. It is the place where King Songtsen Gampo meditated as well as Padma Sambhava and several of his disciples. The site is strongly associated with Jowo Atisha and the early Kadampa masters. After Lunch we will visit the Jokhang temple, which provides yet another exciting and educative tour. Wandering around Barkhor market is another major highlight of the day.

Depart Lhasa
