Breaking news: the Tibetan – Nepali border reopened today!!!

Good news for travellers to Tibet. The border between Tibet and Nepal has been reopened today (August 29, 2017).

The border had been closed since the big earthquake in Nepal in April 2015. But now the border is open again for foreign travellers.

The border is not been reopened at the old border town of Zhangmu. The new border is at Kyirong, a border town a little more to the west. The distance from Kyirong to Kathmandu is about the same as it was from Zhangmu to Kathmandu.

The reopening of the Tibetan – Nepali border means that overland travel from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal and visa versa is possible again.

Welcome to Tibet!
